Here's a short description of the software:

HindiWriter - The Phonetic Hindi Writer (Version 1.2)

Allows you to type in Hindi without having to remember a new keyboard
layout (no font installation required as it uses the built in Indic
language support provided by Windows). It works in all applications
that support Unicode - including Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office,
Notepad, Explorer, Outlook, Windows/MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger (7
and above), Web Based Email (Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail etc.). The program
uses the popular iTrans scheme of transliteration.

It's free, easy and fun to use!

It can be downloaded from:

Update: HindiWriter 1.3 is now available for download.

It now includes a Hindi spellcheck dictionary (with over 60,000 words).
The spellcheck is designed to work with Microsoft Word 2002 (Office
XP).

I don't see evidence this works with Thunderbird, Mozilla, or OpenOffice? Does
or does it not support those programs or any other OSS?

HindiWriter works with Windows 2000, XP, and 2003 Server.

I have used it with OpenOffice without any problem.

I also know of people who have used it with Mozilla.

I am not sure about Thunderbird. If Thunderbird supports Unicode input,
it should work with Thunderbird also.

Please note that the spellcheck feature only works with MS Office.

Thanks.
